Campbell B. takes it to a McCain surrogate
September 4, 2008 – 9:58 amDon’t you wish reporters did this more often:
Johnny Mac canceled an appearance on Larry King (the softest of the softies) in protest for this and other media “attacks” on Sarah Palin. And at last night’s convention, all the speakers took the media to task for, well, doing their job…….
Roger Simon of Politico puts it this way:
On behalf of the media, I would like to say we are sorry….
We have asked questions this week that we should never have asked.
We have asked pathetic questions like: Who is Sarah Palin? What is her record? Where does she stand on the issues? And is she is qualified to be a heartbeat away from the presidency?
We have asked mean questions like: How well did John McCain know her before he selected her? How well did his campaign vet her? And was she his first choice?
Bad questions. Bad media. Bad.
It is not our job to ask questions. Or it shouldn’t be. To hear from the pols at the Republican National Convention this week, our job is to endorse and support….
Now this is all fine. But Campbell and the other media “elite” should be asking the same hard questions of both sides, and they should be doing it ALL the time. How often have you seen a reporter fail to follow up a tough question after his guest responds with talking point blather?
Do me a favor readers, when reporters DO ask the hard questions note the fact and send a supportive e-mail to him/her. You KNOW that CNN is suffering a deluge of negative e-mail from Republicans for Campbell Brown’s tough line of questioning. Hell, the WSJ thought this exchange newsworthy in and of itself.
That’s the sad thing about today’s mainstream media: it’s news when they ask a hard question.

Wow! Amazing watching the robots keep coming back to the “attack the other side” plan instead of sticking to fundamentals defending their own side. There are none!!!
How can people not see that this is all marketing??

Additionally, the time constraints of broadcasting have aided politicians. A reporter may want to continue on a line of questioning yet there is a show producer behind the scenes who is demanding that the show move on to the next topic or interviewee and the reporter is frustrated. Politicians know that if they can keep dithering for just 30 seconds or even less they will survive. In the clip you have there is enough time that all the irrelevant responses are exhausted.

I think the big issue here is that the news media is making such a big deal over her lack of experience/qualifications, while at the same time pretty much totally ignoring the fact that Obama is about equally inexperienced/underqualified to be President.
By stkinvestor on Sep 4, 2008
Great point stkinvestor. I think the media has been too soft on all of them, which is why they’ve lost so much credibility with the average American.

Ms.Brown should be congratulated for standing firm and doing the job of Fifth Estate in these troubled times in unmasking the truth. If similar questions were raised by main stream media re Iraq war and sub-Prime credit, we wouldn’t be, as a nation where we are now.
By S.Nilavar on Sep 4, 2008
I think Campbell was definitely within the limits of questioning to get an answer to Gov. Palin’s experience and why she is a qualified candidate for the Vice-President position. Why the sensitivity from Johnny Mac and the extreme decision not to show up on Larry King Live as a result of not liking Campbell’s line of questioning?
I watched the revealing of Gov. Palin at the RNC last night and

Although I found Palin to be an eloquent speaker I had to remind myself that the speech she delivered was written for her by those in her party that want to present her in the best light. Unfortunately, I found her delivery layered in sarcasm and very devisiive in regards to uniting this country. No candidate is perfect and there are pros and cons on both sides, however, the Republican party seems to think they can relate to the vast majority of Americans who find themselves struggling in today’s economy and yet made no attempt to connect with any of those individuals. The pettyness displayed in the speakers last night to focus on criticizing the opposition made it clear that they are more interested in winning than in helping this country come together for the common cause.

stkinvestor is 100% correct.
i have not heard campbell brown or any other mainstream media outlet ask any of those same questions about obama or biden.
asking these questions is not the problem and i agree this guy was being evasive. the problem is that these questions are only being asked to one side.
By barak hussein obama on Sep 4, 2008
what crap, those are great questions, WHY DON’T THEY ASK THEM OF UNQUALIFIED 143 DAYS IN THE SENATE OBAMA, WHERE IS HIS BIRTH CERTIFICATE? DID HE OR DID HE NOT ATTEND A MUSLIM SCHOOL UNTIL 10 YEARS OLD (WHILE WE ARE AT WAR WITH MURDERING FANATICAL MUSLIMS). HOW COME I SEE NO STORIES ASKING BIDEN ABOUT HIS SON AND BROTHER BEING SUED FOR RIPPING OFF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS FROM INVESTORS, HOW COME THEY DON’T MENTION THAT BIDEN HAS BEEN IN THE CONGRESS SINCE NIXON-CHANGE(WOULD IF A REPUBLICAN) HOW COME THEY DON’T TALK TO OBAMA’S BROTHER (ALSO NAMED HUSSAIN) LIKE THEY WOULD IF MCCAIN’S BROTHER LIVED IN A $1 A DAY HUT.
DON’T SELL THAT CRAP THAT NOW, TODAY THEY ARE QUESTIONING THE CANDIDATES AND WE ARE MAD, NOPE THAT IS GARBAGE AND THEY KNOW IT,
WE GET MAD THAT THEY ONLY QUESTION ONE SIDE.
CAN YOU IMAGINE GEORGE BUSH GETTING DRUNK AND KILLING MARY JO K0PECHNE AND LEAVING HER UNDERWATER AND GOING HOME AND THE PRESS NOT MENTIONING IT FOR 44 YEARS, MAKING HIM A HERO?
CRAP ON CRAP THAT THEY ARE WHINING NOW.
BARNEY FRANK HAD AN UNDERAGE GAY PROSTITUTION RING GOING ON OUT OF HIS BASEMENT, STILL IN OFFICE, NEVER MENTIONED,
ROBERT BYRD WAS A KU KLUX KLAN MAN WHEN THEY ACTUALLY KILLED BLACKS, NEVER MENTIONED
CRY YOUR CRAP TO PEOPLE THAT WILL BELIEVE YOUR WHINING LIES MEDIA, YOU ARE SELF-DESTRUCTING AND WE ARE HAPPILY WATCHING, PLEASE KEEP PROMOTING A MAN WHO IS TRULY UNQUALIFIED TO BE PRESIDENT AND PELOSI AND ALL THOSE KIDS AT THE PPODIUM WHEN SHE TOOK OVER, NOT A SINGLE WORD OF HER STAYING HOME……………YOU GUYS ARE DISGUSTING
AND ONE MORE THING, HOW COME 200 OF YOU AREN’T USING THE WORD GRAVITAS LIKE YOU DID WHEN CHENEY WAS PUT ON THE TICKET FOR UNQUALIFIED TWO TERM GOVERNOR OF ONE OF THE LARGEST STATES IN THE COUNTRY, HMNNNNNNN
BIDEN IS GRAVITAS AT ITS BEST FOR A MAN WHO WAS A JESSIE JACKSON/AL SHARPTON COMMUNITY ORGANIZER AND THEN WORKED 143 DAYS, YOU GUYS GAVE UP YOUR NOMINATION JUST LIKE WITH CRAZY GORE AND CREEPY KERRY, SO DON’T BLAME US

are you kidding me? Everyone knows that CNN is a leftist Liberal/Democratic Party based News Station. If you are remotely educated about politics, you know this already. If you watch CNN then you are wanting to hear negative press about the repub. party and neg. press about the War and neg press about Bush, etc, etc. They are so predictable. CNN is a joke becasue of this, but they will still be able to brain wash a certain percentage of Americans becasue of their lack of total knowledeg of politics. CNN needs to go away silently into the night. So unipartisan. CNN — Childish Narcistic Negativity . Don’t worry, there will be another Negative report after tonights convention from CNN. You can bet on it. Does Vegas allow you to bet on stuff like…..I placing 20K on that wheel.

Unfortunately, the same can be said about the other side Catherine.
This is the problem with partisan politics. We get to select from two sausages filled with some good cuts of meat and really questionable other animal parts. If you start dissecting McCain or the Republican’s too closely, you’ll question the quality of your sausage too (I’m a registered Republican by the way).
I’ve often read that we really have one core party with two colors to pick from: blue and red. Just wait and see, after the elections banners are put away we’ll find ourselves in the same boat. The animal that controls the government goes back to work in tearing down the fabric of this country for their profit.
Neither candidate offers a solution because they were both generated by the same engine that has put the country into this mess. They owe too much to these stakeholders to reform government to the extent that it needs to.
So spare us the diatribe on the quality of yours sausage, or the quality of my sausage for that matter. It’s all we have to eat. Oh, did I mention we bought both sausages on credit?

sorry, but there was nothing “hard” about the 3question…name one executive decision she’s made?
Had the interviewee HAD an answer, that would have been the end of it. But he didn’t and instead of frankly saying, “well I can’t think of one at this moment, but let me get back to you,” which would have at least suspended the issue for the moment, the idiot decided to try to bullshit his way through it.
Even a barely competent reporter with one functioning brain cell (which excludes 99% of our modern press) would invariably call this assclown on it. Brown did so.
Her question wasn’t hard. He just couldn’t answer it and didn’t have the good sense to admit that. Sheesh.
By getaclue on Sep 4, 2008
you mean like when Osama yo mama obama as asked by Rick Warren his about when is a fetus or a baby considered a life, and Obama Said “Well…..that answer is above my paygrade”. Same thing right? You didn’t see CNN headlining that one.
By dirk on Sep 4, 2008
I really am amazed. When you read the responses, you would think that the liberal left wing media has been “doing a good job” and “asking everyone the tough questions”. That’s laughable. I do agree that the McCain spokesman should have told Campbell Brown that he was drawing a blank at the moment and would get back to her, that mayors and governors had to make actual decisions EVERY SINGLE DAY and could not, as Rudy said, simply raise their hand and say “present” as Obama had so eloquently done more than 130 times in his career!
To listen to many of the obviously left leaning responders, these hard-working and hard-hitting jounalists have all asked Obama about his lack of experience (not a single piece of worthwhile legislation, no decision of any magnitude whatsoever) and this is the number 1 spot on the Democratic ticket…not the number 2 spot. Everyone is so concerned that Palin is a heartbeat away from the presidency but Obama is the man they want to vote into the presidency with no more experience and that seems fine with the media…no questions asked!
And where are the questions of Biden about his son’s lobbying efforts and his connections to the company’s lobbying Biden’s committees? Haven’t heard about those??? Good old hard hitting, investigative media for you. How did “getaclue” put it, “even a barely competent reporter…”? Well, seems there are a lot of questions barely competent reporters could be asking other than “name one decision” (which Campbell could easily ask of BHO but I haven’t heard it yet) especially when Campbell Brown said later that her staff researched it themselves and came up examples on their own. Maybe that research would have been better spent BEFORE the interview instead of trying to ambush the spokesman and we really would have had a worthwhile give and take of information!
And finally to Roger Simon of Politico I say, sir, you are a joke! If you all asked the same questions and really made the coverage balanced, you wouldn’t all be looked at as less than pond scum about now. Your ilk have been reduced to mostly bottom feeders, just barely above the sort who run around with cameras following the likes of Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. True Journalists you are not!

If John McCain were to drop dead today, would the Republicans elevate Sarah Palin to the top of the ticket over Giuliani, Huckabee, Thompson, Romney, et al?
By Victor Berry on Sep 4, 2008
Based on her track record, if it were up to her, she’d let Freddie and Fanny fail. She’d sure make them clean up their own mess rather than let our Tax $$$ bail them out.
By RN on Sep 4, 2008
Not to call up the national guard is a decision by itself. Having the power but not to exercise it is an executive decision, and a virtuous one at it! The country would have been a much better place if W did not send troops to Iraq, if Bernanke and Paulson did not jump into the bailouts, and FDR did not set up Fannie Mae to begin with! Despite all their supposed powers.
Truman was just as much a novice when he became the vice president to FDR . . . and his newness did a great service to the country: he disbanded in 1946 numerous redtape “committees” that Hoover and FDR set up between 1929 and 1942 to control the economy, finally putting an end to the Great Depression.

There have been VERY few politicians that I’ve been excited about… the last one was Ronald Reagan. I am as energized by Sarah Palin as I was by Reagan for many of the same reasons.
With that said, I believe Campbell Brown was completely within bounds to ask about Palin’s
readiness to be Commander in Chief, particularly in the context of the McCain campaign’s constant highlighting of the fact
that Senator Obama is completely unprepared
and unqualified for that positoin.
It is the not-so-subtle and completely disgusting attacks on her family and the amusingly sexist questions about whether a parent can also be a leader (is that EVER asked about a man? ) that are so obviously one sided and partisan.
Actually I hope they do more of it. Looks like Sarah can handle it just fine and I can’t imagine any fair-minded independant who is truly undecided not being moved closer to McCain by these liberal elitist media snobs and thier blatant condensention toward regular folks who hold traditional American values.

Have I missed something? When did it become bad to be intelligent, moving, inspiring, and able to draw crowds of over 100,000 as well as face issues with deep thought and planning instead of lies and knee jerk reaction?
GOPers scream about ‘lack of experience”, when they forget the ‘experience” Raygun had..or the idiot currently sitting in the WH. Yet they touted them as ‘fresh’ when Raygun and Shrub were asked that ‘experience” question.
I aks this question every time someone attacks Obama or the Dems with the same old mantra of lies…”Give an example”. I have yet to find anyone who can answer that without reciting a lie or some vague overused mantra which is nowhere close to accuracy.
Obama has gone thorugh 19 months of being looked over..palin one week…and the GOPers are screaming about any scrutiny whatsoever of this “one week wonder”..literally screaming. But then, i guess being a small town mayor, and then 18 months of a state which has no serious economic issues…(with a population less than 80 cities in the mainland) .. qualifies one for presidency.
Obama has selected a team which has made very few mistakes..and he took on Clinton and won. THAT tells me he has experience and wisdom in choosing a plan, a path, and selecting the right people for the right job. Impressive.
The ones attacking Obama? Think about their credibility. They’re the ones who gave us Shrub. They’re the ones who gave us the iraq War, they’re the ones who aren’t complaining bin Laden remains free. They’re the ones who gave us this economy. They’re the ones who want to drill drill drill and keep us addicted and hooked to Middle East oil and politics.
Not exactly people who I think are credible.
Bottom line..if you are satisfied with where we have gone these past 7 years…vote McCain for more of the same. If you want change, vote Obama.

Let’s keep this simple. If you want to hear unbiased reporting, tune to FOX news. I don’t mind the hard hitting questions but to continually harp on her ability to govern with children was tiring. I was a die hard Obama voter until Palin came on the scene. The outright vitreolic reporting of the mainstream press had placed my vote for the Republicans. I figure when stupid people hate something so much, it has to be good.
By Steve on Sep 5, 2008
You repugs are disgusting. You can honestly listen to Faux news and say its unbiased? Its laughable. It deliberately squashed most coverage of Ron Paul, the only qualified candidate, and the few times he was on, he thoroughly embarassed that moron Cavuto.
CNN was simply asking questions about the hottie that needed to be asked. No doubt they will ask the same questions of Obama/Biden but then thats one of the reason Obama picked Biden was foreign policy experience.
Fact is the country will be ruined with either candidate/surrogate. But you Repugs will retain the smug satifaction in maintaining your evil empire.
By Fred on Sep 5, 2008
I think is funny. Its like listening to little children talk on the play ground. Sarah Palin may not have ANY experience whatsoever, but what she lacks in that department she seems to make up for in avarice and guile. I’m certain those skills will put her shoulder to shoulder with the Washington crowd.
How short is everyone’s memory here. Remember when Obama was shown with the turban. How long did we have to hear about that? We still see that photo floating around even now. How about the stuff with Obama’s minister? That topic is still around.
I could go back a couple of years and talk about Clinton and the Republicans…but I’ll spare everyone.
Now the Republican’s are crying about hard questions being asked about a newcomer to the national political scene? Grow the “F” up.
